WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero (27-0, 27 KOs) put on a magnificent display of boxing skills as he punished interim champion Antonio DeMarco (23-2-1, 17 KOs) on Saturday night at the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. Valero suffered a nasty laceration just above his right cheekbone, and a huge gash on the forehead in round two from a DeMarco elbow. Valero, however, remained the aggressor as he both outpunched and outboxed DeMarco in nearly every round. After eight rounds of nonstop action, DeMarco's trainer Romulo Quirarte halted fight. Impressive defense for Valero as he overcame adversity to win in front of a worldwide audience.

In a good action fight, unbeaten welterweight Luis Carlos Abregu (29-0, 23 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over Richard Gutierrez (24-4-1, 14 KOs). Abregu was dropped by a left hook in round two, but got up to floor Gutierrez in round three. Abregu was cut over the left eye by a punch in round seven but coasted to a 98-90, 97-91, 97-91 win.
