Team Sauerland head coach Ulli Wegner today received the German Federal Cross of Merit. The 68-year-old, who has been voted German coach of the year seven straight times, was honoured for his career accomplishments. He has led the likes of Marco Huck, Sven Ottke, Markus Beyer and Cecilia Braekhus to world titles and also guided
ex-champion Arthur Abraham to international stardom. “This is a great honour,” Wegner said. “It really means a lot to me. Without my team and of course my athletes, this would have never been possible. I am deeply touched.”

Wegner is not the only member of Team Sauerland that has been awarded a prize this week. The European Boxing Union (EBU) honoured the Berlin-based boxing stable with the “2009 Promoter of the Year Award”, which will be officially presented at the EBU´s next General Assembly in Madrid on June 12. On the same weekend, Wilfried Sauerland will officially be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York during the annual Hall of Fame celebrations.
