In Saturday's “Super Six” super middleweight tournament, Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KOs) take a unfortunate but impressive DQ over previously unbeaten, former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KOs) on Saturday night at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan. Dirrell dominated a defensive Abraham early in the fight. Down on the cards, Abraham began asserting himself, but Dirrell dropped an off-balance Abraham in round four. Dirrell again outworked Abraham in rounds five through seven, causing a bat cut over his right eye. Needing a knockout victory, Abraham landed a bombed that floored Dirrell in the tenth, and was waved off by referee Laurence Cole.
In the eleventh round, Abraham kept the pressure on Dirrell causing him to slip on the canvas. However, while on the canvas, a desperate Abraham rocked Dirrell with a helacious shot knocking a defenseless Dirrell out. Abraham was disqualified by Cole at 1:13. At the time of the DQ, Dirrell was ahead 97-92, 98-91, 97-92. Abraham later insisted that Dirrell wasn’t down when he threw the final punch. As a safety precaution Dirrell was taken to the hospital for tests.
Unbeaten junior welterweight Vernon Paris (20-0, 13 KOs) dropped Oscar Leon (28-12, 18 KOs) in round two, then cruised to a 60-53 win on all cards.
