In the days leading up to the March 13th showdown between Manny "Pac Man" Pacquiao and Joshua "Grand Master" Clottey, anticipation has the hardcore boxing base abuzz. In a prizefight titled "The Event, seven division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, will be facing possibly his strongest opposition to date. It was approximately five months ago when Pacquiao claimed his seventh world title, as well as the newly created Diamond Belt, when knocking out welterweight champion Miguel Cotto. That fight was hardly competitive, as Manny destroyed his welterweight foe. The stunning fashion of victory leads most pundits to believe he will make short work over the durable Joshua Clottey.
Manny Pacquiao began his pugilistic profession as a flyweight. He was a relatively unheralded fighter with limited skills, but showed flashes of boxing brilliance when competing against tougher opposition. Those finite set of skills are what made fights against Nedal Hussein, Medgoen Singsurat, and Agapito Sanchez tougher than what was shown on paper. Seeking the direction of a new team, Pacquiao sought the assistance of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach. Manny believed Freddie Roach, an Eddie Futch protégé, was the best trainer available to guide his career and to get him the best sparring to complement the excellent tutelage. And, as they say, the rest is history.
Manny Pacquiao is touted as the pound for pound best fighter in boxing, a status once held by Floyd Mayweather Jr. A potential mega matchup was on the horizon for both Mayweather and Pacquiao, but individual differences led the fight to be cancelled, and possibly postponed until later in the year. Most people feel that a victory over Joshua Clottey will give Pacquiao the edge necessary to dethrone the sport's most talented fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Pacquiao has already defeated several future hall of famed fighters, and a victory over Joshua Clottey will give him experience in deciphering one of the best defenses in this sport.
Joshua Clottey views this fight against Pacquiao as his "coming out party." He has faced three of the best welterweights in the world, going 1-2 respectively, coming up short twice in very competitive encounters. Joshua Clottey is a rough, rugged fighter with an excellence defense and great counter punching ability. He is easily one of the most avoided guys in the sport of boxing. Most of the fighters he has faced had difficulties breaking through his "peek-a-boo" defense when mounting an offense against him.
His high guard, elbows, forearms, and shoulders block most of the flurries thrown against him. Therefore, that leaves an overwhelming question, why does Clottey always seem to get the short end of the stick in fights? The knock against Clottey is that he does not throw enough punches to win rounds. The few punches he throws per round are precise and accurate as they are hard. However, the problem for Clottey is not the quality of the punches thrown. The quantity of punches has not enabled judges to score close competitive rounds in his favor. Boxing pundits have noted that Joshua Clottey’s opposition used a high work rate and/or good lateral movement to secure victories against him. Joshua Clottey is the largest opponent Pacquiao will have faced. The contracted weight for this welterweight encounter is 147lbs, but Clottey will most likely enter the ring weighing close to 170lbs.
Pacquiao has not only taken the top spot as the best fighter in the world, but he has arguably become the sport's premier pay per view attraction. He could have faced virtually anyone on March 13th and made a seven-figure purse. So, why would he risk his status and winning streak against one of the toughest fighters in the world? Legacy. He is fighting for the recognition that he continuously desires to face the very best fighters in world, something that Floyd Mayweather has been highly criticized for not doing. While the masses have predicted another impressive Pacquiao victory, fights are not won on paper. This fight is no walk in the park for either fighter. Pacquiao will have to train extremely hard and prepare himself to fight as if this were his last fight. He will be coming into Dallas, Texas with the heart, skill, power, and ability necessary to defeat another solid welterweight, adding another notch to a legendary career. Many welterweights have shown the reluctance to face Joshua Clottey. Nevertheless, Manny Pacquiao, a former World Flyweight Champion, immediately accepted the challenge with the confidence that mirrors the unwavering adherence to be an all-time great like Henry Armstrong. Therefore, whatever the outcome of this fight, you have to give to the Pac-Man credit for never looking for another easy victory. This man, the pride of Philippines, has heart, determination, and guts.

Clottey can also be labelled as a boring fighter for not throwing as much punches in a fight but unlike Kentucky Floyd Chicken, at least he does not run. Should Clottey and KFC fights each other, my money is on Clottey.

nice article man, floyd doesn't really want to clean up the sports but his main purpose is to take an advantage against manny because he know the height and size is not enugh thats why he strongly pushes that olympic style drug testing.

honestly.. ive never head of mayweather until his name got linked with manny pacquiao. us casual boxing fans know only a great fighter when we see him fight like warrior, not like the way other boxers bore us with their so called boxing skills.

NEWS FLASH: hehehe the Mayweather camp doesn't doesn't stop with their obsession about Pacquiao.
